Man City on course to win Premier League title as Haaland scores twice in 2-0 win over Tottenham

LONDON (AP) — Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City beat Tottenham 2-0 on Tuesday and moved within one victory of a fourth straight Premier League title.

The three-time defending champions will enter the final day on Sunday with a two-point lead over second-placed Arsenal.

City host West Ham in their final league match of the season, while Arsenal are also at home to Everton.

“Tennis players say ‘serving to win Wimbledon’, the last match, is the hardest,” City manager Pep Guardiola said. “We know what we are playing for. The tension is there, the rival is so good. That’s why it’s difficult, we know.

Haaland gave City the lead in the 51st minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when he converted Kevin De Bruyne’s cross from close range.

He scored his second penalty in the first minute of stoppage time after Pedro Porro brought down Jeremy Doku.

Victory means City are masters of their own destiny in the title race, even if they were pushed all the way by Arsenal.

Guardiola is now within reach of a sixth league title in seven seasons.

No other English team has managed to win four league titles in a row, while City are also looking to win back-to-back league and FA Cup doubles.

Before Tuesday’s match, with Arsenal a point behind, Guardiola warned his players that anything other than maximum points would end their dominance of England’s top division. This only increased the pressure on his team, who were also looking to end a run of four league defeats against Spurs.

And the opportunity seemed to present itself to the City players in a nervous first half.

“They were playing for the consequences of the result. When you do that, you are going to lose the Premier League,” Guardiola said. “They’re human beings, I understand the pressure.”

Haaland’s goal six minutes into the second eased the tension. But although their goals were decisive, City had to rely on substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to keep Spurs at bay as the home side attempted to equalise.

Coming on in the 69th after Ederson suffered a head injury in a collision with Cristian Romero, Ortega quickly had to block a close-range effort from Dejan Kulusevski.

He later made another save to deny the Spurs striker, but Ortega’s best moment came in the 86th when Son Heung-min fired home.

With only the keeper to beat, Son looked certain to score as he shot low towards the corner. A draw would have put Arsenal in control of the title ahead of Sunday’s season finale – but Son could only watch as Ortega pulled a leg to deflect the ball.

Guardiola, who was watching, had his head in his hands before falling to the ground in relief.

Soon after, Doku lured Porro into a slot in the Spurs box and referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot.

Haaland put the match beyond doubt by firing his shot into the top corner for his second of the match and his 38th of the season. City’s victory also ensured Aston Villa secured fourth place and qualification for next season’s Champions League ahead of Tottenham in fifth.
